What’s a boutique hotel? It’s a term used to describe smaller hotels of no more than 100 rooms that host unique settings and upscale accommodations. Today, we are a proud boutique hotel with each room designed and decorated individually with different art and furniture pieces. Tony Hsieh scooped up the Gold Spike and transformed the smoky casino into a smoke free hang out space, complete with restaurant and bar, and also built an accompanying hotel―The Oasis! We were transformed from a once run down Travelodge built in 1962. Downtown Las Vegas has also grown and evolved with art murals thrown onto the sides of buildings and art installations like the love locks on display in front of the Container Park or the world’s largest fire hydrant outside of the dog park (hint: pull the lever for a surprise). Perhaps most importantly, as the downtown area has changed, its appearance has maintained the old Vegas feel with classic neon signage. He bulldozed a run down Motel 6 and built The Container Park, and put a pyrotechnic praying mantis in front because he thought it would make people smile. He put in $350 million dollars into the Downtown Project, using his personal fortune. Hsieh recruited people to move downtown, offering housing in apartments like The Ogden. He wanted a younger generation to come make art, great food and a community driven culture here. His goal was to change the image of downtown, and fast. He began a revitalization called the Downtown Project. He decided to move his company and all its 1,000 employees to the old Las Vegas city hall in downtown. He’s the CEO of the extremely successful company Zappos, and the innovator behind downtown Las Vegas’s rejuvenation. Through the years downtown instead became associated with drug use, homelessness and other dangerous activities. The casinos still made money, but it wasn’t even close to matching the powerhouses of the Strip. In 1995, the Fremont Street Experience opened in Downtown Las Vegas, but the area had begun to decline. But in the 1990’s, the Strip began transforming, enticing more tourists further down the boulevard. Vegas was booming thanks to the gaming and hotel industry. That’s when casinos really hit their stride, and lavish hotels began popping up. After World War II, Las Vegas became known as a city for partying and big entertainment. Downtown Las Vegas was once the premier place to gamble and party in Las Vegas long before the Strip existed.

When a woman laughs at a man, she’s often made to understand that she has made a category error: he is a man, not a joke. It protects him against becoming a joke himself. The misogynist joke is offensive, but even more than most jokes, it’s also defensive. Who are you, Freud? A sex-negative Gen-Zer on Twitter? Are you really going to conceptualize something this harmless as an assault on the female imagination, as Freud does in Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, where a male “assailant” functionally “exposes” the “assailed” woman through his sexually explicit speech? Why blow the cover of the dirty joke, that slightly more civilized form of “smut” that still aims to expose the implicit female listener but gives itself some prophylactic protection? “ tendentious joke”-by which Freud means a joke that has some purpose beyond itself-“calls for three people: in addition to the one who makes the joke, there must be a second who is taken as the object of the hostile or sexual aggressiveness, and a third in whom the joke’s aim of producing pleasure is fulfilled.” What do you call a pleasure-producing three-way? A misogynist joke. It’s always wine o’clock somewhere!Īnd really, who but a humorless scold would take such casually misogynist jokes seriously? They’re just jokes, often so obsolete as to be almost automatically ironic. Sometimes misogynist jokes are even understood to be doing the reparative work of social justice, as when the tragedy of white women’s deadly complicity in the history of anti-Blackness gets happily converted into the comedy of white women’s utterly unserious femininity. But humor still provides misogyny a convincing alibi, in certain milieus, that it no longer seems to afford other offensive material aimed at marginalized groups. Those examples, too, are as embarrassingly out of touch as a middle-aged Karen, clinging to relevance and showing up uninvited, like the outdated Overly Attached Girlfriend meme from the early 2010s. Sometimes violence is itself the joke, as in The Honeymooners’ Ralph Kramden’s shaking fist and catchphrase (“One of these days … Pow! Right in the kisser!”) or Cary Grant’s thinking better of socking Katharine Hepburn in the slapstick opening scene of The Philadelphia Story and instead letting her down gently with the soft part of his palm. Like all humor, misogynist jokes sublimate violence, in a way that’s so routine that it can be hard to see how precarious a sublimation it is. The punch line to “Do you want to hear a misogynist joke?” is “No!” It beats actual punching, of course. “How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?” goes a classic “That’s not funny,” is the nonanswer. What makes them even funnier is that they’re humorless. Here’s another one: women are themselves a joke, not to be taken seriously. As Milton’s postlapsarian Adam says in Paradise Lost, surveying the dim future of humanity that the angel Michael has laid out before him, watching man fall over and over again, “But still I see the tenor of Man’s woe / Holds on the same, from Woman to begin.” Whoa, man! Take my wife-is she still here? You get older, but these jokes stay timeless. Still, even some of the oldest jokes in the book can manage to get off a laugh, or at least a faint smile of familiarity. Misogynist jokes feel tired almost the moment they’re coined-much like flowers, often compared to women in old poems because both wilt as soon as they bloom into beauty. As Mike Myers recites on stage in his role as a moody slam poet in the thrillingly zany 1993 Hitchcockian send-up So I Married an Axe Murderer, “Woman! Whoa, man. Get it? Woman is a container for man language engenders gender subordination. Why are they called “women”? Because they’re a woe to men. Not a very good joke-a groaner, a dad joke. THE FUNNY THING about misogyny is it’s structured like a joke. Subscribe now or preorder a copy from the LARB shop. This article is an excerpt from the LARB Quarterly, no. And I commend and send thanks to NTT DOCOMO’s large team, who exhibited tremendous patience, flexibility, and an adventurous spirit well in keeping with their company’s great heritage.Emojis trace their roots back to Japan in the late 1990s, where the term itself is a combination of “e” (meaning picture) and “moji” (meaning character). I also thank our Chief Curator, Martino Stierli, A&D Curatorial Assistant Michelle Fisher, Alexis Sandler of the MoMA General Counsel office, and Betty Fisher in the Exhibition Design department. First and foremost I must thank the indefatigable Paola Antonelli, our fearless advocate for expanding an appreciation of the field of design to new realms, who initiated this project. Paul Galloway, MoMA architecture & design collection specialist, said that “This acquisition was the work of many people both at MoMA and at NTT DOCOMO. When Apple released the updated, unicode version for iPhone in 2011, they became the new form of communication we know today. The 176 emoji (picture characters) became an instant hit and were copied by rival companies in Japan. That show, which displayed everything from band-aids to light bulbs under plexiglass, even made references to Philip Johnson’s original Machine Art show by including the ball bearings that were one of the first acquisitions by MoMA in 1934.Īs for emojis, this set was seminal in the history of telecommunications. “The design of a chair dictates our posture so, too, does the format of electronic communication shape our voice.” The institution gained notoriety for these cheeky acquisitions when they got the symbol and a set of seminal video games, all of which is a 21st-century continuation of curator Paola Antonelli’s famous Humble Masterpieces show from 2003 that set off a decade-plus exploration of the beautiful in everyday objects. MoMA credits the new language with altering the way we communicate. This set off the beginning of an entirely new language that would eventually become ubiquitous in mobile messaging. The original set was released to cell phones in 1999. The original “12 x 12 pixel humble masterpieces,” as MoMA called them in their Medium post, were developed by NTT DOCOMO under the supervision of Shigetaka Kurita. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York announced today that it has acquired the original 176-character set of emojis for their permanent collection. This cloned repository includes all project branches, providing you with a local copy of the remote branches. Cloning a repository essentially generates a new directory encompassing all the project files and history. In Git, cloning refers to the process of copying a Git repository, typically from a remote server to your local machine. This process enables everyone to contribute without causing disarray.Ĭloning is a concept frequently associated with remote branches. Each developer operates on their own branch, merging their changes back into the main branch upon completion. They facilitate simultaneous project work by multiple developers without interference. In distributed workflows, branches play an integral role. It’s akin to a mirror reflecting your project’s state on the remote repository.Įxample of creating and switching to a new branch: git checkout -b Conversely, a remote branch is a branch on a remote repository that you track locally. The main branch, often termed ‘master’ or ‘main’, is the default branch where all changes are ultimately merged. You might be pondering over the distinction between the main branch and a remote branch. This flexibility positions branches as one of Git’s most potent features. It serves as your personal sandbox for experimentation and changes, without the risk of disrupting the main project. A branch in Git can be likened to an independent development line. Alternative Method of Resetting Local Branchīefore diving into resetting your local Git branch to remote, let’s first grasp the concept of a Git branch and its significance. For more advanced methods, background, tips, and tricks, continue reading the article. However, this can lead to loss of uncommitted work, so always save your work and back up your branch before resetting. This command discards any local commits not present on the remote branch, aligning your local branch with the remote. To reset a local Git branch to remote, you can use the git reset command. Ready to tackle this Git challenge? Let’s dive in! TL DR: How do I reset a local Git branch to remote? In this post, we’ll delve into various methods of resetting a local Git branch to remote and the precautions to take when doing so. Fortunately, there are strategies to reset your local Git branch to remote, restoring harmony. Have you ever pushed changes only to find everything out of sync? It’s like trying to find the right frequency on an old radio. However, like solving a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded, Git can be perplexing, especially when it comes to syncing local and remote branches. Git is an indispensable tool in a developer’s arsenal, akin to a Swiss Army Knife. |
